MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMICS
Leadership
Every 6th, 7th, and 8th grader at St. John Lutheran School is given the role and responsibility of being a Christian leader and friendly role model for the entire school. Each Middle School grade includes a homeroom teacher and the opportunity to mix grades for core classes and arts electives. A specialized faculty scaffold the gap between elementary-level and high school-level by engaging the students with rigorous and interesting coursework, having high expectations, and giving individualized attention to students’ needs. Small class sizes and passionate educators ensure that every student is not only guided toward success academically but is also growing in their understanding of what it means to be a child of God, redeemed by grace.
Academics
The Middle School students are challenged with a science curriculum that is packed with hands-on experience emphasizing labs, projects, and real-life application. A discussion-based, foundation-building English and Literature curriculum will prepare students to write high-school-level essays, construct thoughtful responses to relevant literature, and promote reading as an important tool to academic success and personal growth. 6th grade Social Studies covers the foundation of our government and American History. 7th and 8th Grader alternate between World Civilization and World Geography. 7th and 8th-grade students have the opportunity to join multi-level math classes, including a Pre-Algebra and Algebra track.
Fine Arts
Every spring, the 8th grade English class studies drama and puts on a play for the school and Seward community. A wide variety of Fine Arts opportunities are offered to students including handbells, choir, band, individual piano lessons, and music classes. The students are often called upon to serve the church and school as musicians in chapel and church services, promoting an attitude of using our gifts and talents to serve our Lord with gladness.
Technology
St. John leverages the use of technology for curriculum delivery, instruction, and student learning. Multiple platforms are utilized but student interaction is centered around one to one iPad integration in grades 6-8.
Counseling Support
St. John is one of very few Lutheran K-8 schools to implement a comprehensive school counseling program. The school counseling program serves all students through classroom social/emotional curriculum, small group curriculum, and individual brief/solution-focused counseling. The school counselor collaborates and consults with administration, teachers, and families to support the academic success and emotional health of the students.
